Information Design: Final Project

Instructions

WEEK 1 (12/1/2023)
We watched the seniors' final project examples in class to get a better idea of what to expect. Our theme this sem is "burnout", and we have the courtesy of using one of our senior's scripts and voice-over for the motion graphic clip.

However, to get us in the mood of the project, Mr Martin asked us to share our worst burnout experience on our blog (aka here), so here's mine:

One of the worst burnouts I've ever had was in sem 1, during the final project of DPI (yes, I chose this just to fit the theme). We had many deadlines squeezed together at the end of the semester, and DPI was one of the modules you just have a higher tendency to overlook due to the chill-er nature of the module. I was feeling very uninspired and unmotivated to work on my self-portrait, cause the webcomic we're expected to magically whip up has squeezed me dry mentally and physically. I was very fed up with having to work on my self-portrait I ended up half-assing it in the end. Such a shame, what burnout does to a person.

Research and Discussion

WEEK 3 (23/1/2023)
After having our group discussion, we decided to go for a minimalistic approach with our motion graphic. We stumbled upon a video that manipulates simple shapes in a creative way to tell a story and we found that very interesting to experiment with and is something different from the usual educational motion graphics.
Here is our mood board/art direction:

Next, we discussed and came up with the breakdown of the script as well as its visual suggestions. The final doc will be uploaded sooner in this post, but here's a work-in-process pic of us working on it.

Moving on, we started the storyboarding process. We delegated parts to each member so everyone is only responsible for sketching their own storyboard. I'm very stressed out by some last-minute changes towards our proposal for the intercultural design module, so I used this as my escape. Please excuse my very unserious attempt at storyboarding. Making terrible memes is my coping mechanism.

WEEK 4 (2/2/2023)
After more discussion, we decided to (kinda) redo our storyboard to match a more consistent style for the animated version. We took Pei Yun's artstyle as our main point of reference and art direction. She also provided us assets of the main character design and it's ADORABLE. Our child.

Ah yes, nothing better than spending the night doing a free rider's work for her 🥰🥰
Here's how it turned out:

Anyways, we kicked her out already. Now let's continue our recipe infographic. The pasta grannies are waiting.

WEEK 6 (16/2/2023)
After yet another meeting, we decided that we will be splitting the workload into two teams, the illustration team and the animation team. I'm in the animation team, so now I will have to wait for the illustration team to complete their part in order to begin with mine.

Animation

The illustration team did an amazing job at making the assets and keeping the instructions super clear. Kudos to them! Now it's time to separate the assets to different layers and begin the animation process ✊🏻✊🏻

And so the animation process begins. I'm in charge of S10 and S11 as well as the final compilation. Why do I keep subjecting myself to suffering? Here is how the first draft for S10 turned out:
Now moving on to S11. Back to Illustrator we go.

The process was a lot smoother this time around, thankfully, after the experimenting when animating S10. Here is how S11 eventually turned out:

Now if you'd excuse me, it's time to get back to my Pasta Grannies. I'll be back after the feedback and compilation.

WEEK 7 (23/2/2023)
We are in the final week already. HOW. And feedback this week was brutal man. We have a lot of work to do before we could submit it next week.
Here are my 2nd drafts:
S10: Play and Have Fun
S11: Align your Purpose

WEEK 8 (2/3/2023)
After everyone uploaded their corrected drafts, I got to work with the compilation. Here is how it turned out:

Still not happy with the final outcome, we nitpicked some mistakes and begged for an extension on the deadline. We do not want to settle for less even if it means taking up more work than we're supposed to. Back to work now.

Helped out my other teammate with some final adjustments by reanimating certain parts. Last one, hopefully!!

Here's how they turned out:
S4: Perfectionism
S5: Loneliness

Final Outcome

Feedback

WEEK 6 (16/2/2023)
Mr Martin suggests that we should have another consultation after our first animation draft is done as currently everything still appeared pretty vague. The art style we chose was fine, but we should consider adding some captions wherever necessary. Some scenes should have more variation.

WEEK 7 (23/2/2023)
Our leader made an entire google doc dedicated for this week's feedback breakdown because there's really just that much that needs to be redone. But basically:
general
-too many scenes
-ugly text 👁️👄👁️
-show keywords instead of a full sentence
S1
...Sth you enjoy...not anymore:
-the ball bounces happily den sad
S2
-don't keep changing scenes for the same things, make it continuous
-label the flasks
-add text
S8
-Better text animation
S11
-better representation of hard & challenging

WEEK 8 (2/3/2023)
Mr Martin said it was okay to just submit, perhaps because it's already the deadline, but we weren't happy with certain parts yet. So here's more feedback from our reliable leader and among ourselves because we do not settle for less.

Reflection

Wow, this was an emotional whirlwind of a project. This is the epitome of "choose good teammates, or suffer". I suddenly relate to that meme where the team only allows people with a cgpa higher than 3.5 to join the group. We should enforce that fr.
This semester has been VERY group work-centric and I'm VERY burnout from all of it. The irony, I know. But the process also built a lot of connections and relationships that I probably wouldn't be able to have outside of this project. After all, bonds created from ranting and fretting about assignments and awful teammates are the strongest.
The outcome was a joint slay. I think we did a great job bringing our initial ideas to life. It's a beautiful thing, when teamwork actually WORKS. When in dire times, we stepped up to assist each other to lighten the load and I'm proud of how far we've come. I am also proud of how far me and Ae have come as well.
Until next time!
