Lecture & Tutorial

WEEK 6 (11/5/2023)

We were instructed to get our character design finalised and start on the base., I decided to carry over my character design from the Character Design module.

Seeing how complicated the outfit is, I decided to simplify some parts of the design, including her hand gloves, shoe details, head accessories, and many other accessories. It sounds like a lot lol, but it'll be enough for Project 1, just starting out. I'll add and polish up the details in the coming projects.

WEEK 7 (18/5/2023)

Started out with the base of the sculpt. I used a lot of references from interest, but Mr Kannan commented that I should focus on getting the fundamental proportions right before focusing on details.

    WEEK 9 (1/6/2023)

This week, I worked more on the clothing and hair of the character. The extract and inflate tool works wonders, so the process has been pretty enjoyable. However, the shoes were a pain to make. The hair was also...something, alright.

    WEEK 10 (8/6/2023)

The base is pretty much done at this point. I also added some colour, and immediately aborted when told it wasn't necessary for this project (and who could blame me? I was holding onto dear life at this point) Mr Kannan suggested minor changes to the proportions before submission. He also commented on the tense state of my hands and suggested a more relaxed stance instead. The changes can be done in Project 2, but me being me, I redid the hands and feet before submission.

Here is the progression over the course of these few weeks:

      Feedback

      WEEK 7 (18/5/2023)

      fig 2.1.1 week 7 feedback (18/5/2023)
Some proportions need to be readjusted from the shoulder to the hips & feet. Work on the feet more.

      WEEK 9 (1/6/2023)

      • The pants are too poofy. Look up more references on how poofy fabric hangs on body
      • the character proportions are still uneven, the feet, hips and knees need more adjustments
      • Some parts of the arms are jutting out too much.

      WEEK 10 (8/6/2023)

        fig 2.2 week 10 feedback (8/6/2023)

        • The shins are a bit too muscular. Can tone down and soften it a bit
        • Abs can be less intense
        • hands are strained and stiff in this position
        • feet are awkward from front and 3/4 view.
        • reevaluate the positioning of head and neck

        Reflection

This semester has been a lot of observing and extracting information from visual analysis. Getting references has helped tremendously in the sculpting process, indicating where the bones should jut out and where it curves in. I suppose some parts were made to be too exaggerated, especially her back, but more referencing helped correct that. Zbrush as a programme is a handful to manoeuvre even after weeks of practice, but I've grown to appreciate its functions and how to go about them.

Overall, this seemed to be one of the more challenging modules this semester, having to explore and experiment with new software and moulding something elaborate out of a freaking sphere, but it really put my endurance and patience to the test, which I feel are important qualities a designer should have.
