Project 3: Character Design Execution

Project brief:

WEEK 10 (9/6/2023) & WEEK 11 (16/6/2023)
To-dos:
  • Experiment with splash arts
  • Select a hero pose
  • Work on splash art

No longer feeling any of the poses from the previous project, I decided to sketch new ones (this is becoming a problem) See this as a hero pose variation study, in a way. I wanted to depict my character and her relationship with stones, with the Q being a badass earth-bending moment, but with gemstones attached. These are the rough sketches:

Eventually, I went for none of those, and came up with this sketch instead:

She's still holding an old weapon sketch because the timeline is messed up at this point and I'm no longer trying to hide it. I liked how this expresses her curious nature and passion for gemstones while capturing her elegance and relationship with the mines.

WEEK 13 (30/6/2023)
To-dos:
  • Render hero pose
  • Work on splash art
Moving on, I started the rendering. I added a sky as the background to the splash art because it felt a bit plain with only the rocks. I tried looking for gemstone brushes to hopefully speed up the process, but they're mostly paid brushes, and the textured one I found didn't help much, so I pretty much rendered it from scratch...Like everything else. I've never done anything close to a background digitally before, so it was a challenge and I had to look up a lot of references to get it right. Truthfully, I hope it could be better, but with the limited time, I'm pretty proud of how it turned out.

Sure it took 9 hours, but long story short, I survived.
The final outcome can be viewed in the slides below.
Here's the 9hours compressed into 30s:

Project 4:Character Board

Project brief:

WEEK 14 (7/7/2023)
To-dos:
  • Compile everything for task 4 submission :D
For this task, we are required to compile everything we've done for the past 14 weeks and smack it onto A3 boards. Calling it a character bible makes everything sound x10 cooler, even though it was a tad bit undeserving. Hence, I compiled everything and started working on it in Illustrator. I used the Genshin Impact fonts and made Genshin Impact wishing screens & character backing cards to match!

It's satisfying to see my 14 weeks of progress all laid out in 5 pages, tho somehow it made it look lesser than it felt.
Still, it was my first Genshin child that I crafted from nothing. I had 14 weeks and a dream and made it work the best I could. I hope you like Jing Ying as much as I did designing her.

WEEK 14 (7/7/2023)
Good job on making the splash art very sparkly :)

Reflection

And my favourite module of this semester goes to!! (hint: it's this one)
I loved this module and what we were allowed to do with it. Designing Jing Ying from scratch was a huge accomplishment, and seeing her in her final splash art form makes me feel like a proud mom. This module covered all aspects of designing a character, and I enjoy exploring all sorts of different details I could add to my character to make her design better. Through my visual exploration and the process of building my moldboard for various tasks in this module, I learned to observe and extract design elements that fit my work. I also learned to break down existing Genshin Impact designs to learn what they have in common so I could use that knowledge in designing my own character.
Designing the splash art was not a huge challenge, as I always had an idea of how I wanted it to go beforehand. However, that could also have been a limitation as it resulted in my splash art exploration going in only one direction. Rendering was a hassle, as I've never done a full-on background digitally before, even traditionally it was very sparse. I enjoyed the challenge and while it could've been better, I'm happy with how it turned out, and it encouraged me to try out more splash art designs in my future works.
Overall I'd say this module was one that helped me improve my digital drawing skills and I enjoyed it very much :D
