Task 1 : Create an Empathy Map & Define a Problem Statement

WEEK 1

This week, we were briefed on the MIB of the module and got to learn more about what we will be doing for this course this semester. Our lecturer, Ms Tan Li Lian, walked us through the requirements and tasks for the module. And this was essentially Minor Project 2.0. Can't say that I'm thrilled but we will be working with collaborators from the Business school. I was reunited with my groupmates and classmates from the previous semester, forming Group 3, which we jokingly named MBTIC3, as most on the group are Introverts.

WEEK 2

This week, we started working on the initial stages of the project, covering the contextual research, and deepening our understanding of the project. The brief was altered and updated from the previous week. It is about an ongoing project that students from the Business school is trying to execute - QuantoCube, a home renovation service provider app that serves both homeowners and contractors who are looking to expand their business online.
We worked as a group to brainstorm on the empathy maps, thinking from the perspectives of both the contractor and homeowners. Because we were a bit behind schedule, having not done much for the past week, we worked extra hard this week to catch up.

We managed to cover everything that we needed to get done within days. I was tasked with carrying out the contextual research alongside everyone, and construct the user persona and user journey map for one of the primary users of the app - the contractors. We then had a 3-hour meeting to organize our notes & findings, brainstorm further and delegate tasks for the presentation next week. I think mainly how we managed to complete 2weeks worth of work in 1 is due to the fact that we worked very well as a team as everybody pitched in their fair share of ideas and put their all into this project to make up for lost time.

WEEK 3

This week, we had our first presentation with the class. Prior to the presentation, we delegated the task among everyone to design and build our slides deck. We also had meetings to practice on our presentation to ensure that the information on everyone's parts were accurate, and we could finish the presentation within the given timeframe.
The presentation went smoothly, and it was interesting seeing how the other groups interpreted the brief and their direction in working with it. It was a good learning experience for everyone. We made sure to double triple check and patch up our project document and presentation slides before handing it in.

Week 3 consultation notes:
  • great level of detail in our competitor analysis
  • Try to connect the findings of our analysis in proposing good design solutions for the app
  • good effort in identifying the problems of the target audience and coming up with interesting solutions as features for the app
  • interesting ideas on our ideation moodboard for task 2. Continue to develop those ideas and finalise a solid art direction by next week.
  • keep in mind of the time frame of the project and do not be overly ambitious.

Reflection

Experience:
The past 3 weeks were a TRIP of us trying our best to fit 2 weeks of work into 1, and actually managing to pull it off. It was very fun to be able to team up with friends from the previous semester again, and that gives me motivation to give my all for this module. It's been a while since I had a marathon of a 3-hour meeting, where we squeezed our brain juice dry for the best outcome. This module really kick-started this semester for me and got me back into the zone of doing assignments after a 4 month break.

Observation:
An observation I made is the importance of having a diversity of perspectives within a group. Our different opinions on a subject lead to many enriching discussions, creating a creative environment for us to work in. Witnessing the presentations of other groups also provided valuable insights into alternative approaches to the same brief, highlighting the importance of flexibility and adaptability in the creative process. This also gave us more insights on how we could potentially further enhance our project.

Findings:
Our consultation and presentation in Week 3 gave us valuable feedback that affirmed our analysis and the creativity of our proposed solutions. This encouraged further refinement, especially in developing the ideas showcased on our ideation mood board. However, we are also reminded to carry a realistic assessment of the project's time constraints and tamper down our ambition. Moving forward, our challenge will be to execute our proposed solutions, ensuring that our ideas are not only creative but also implementable within the allotted timeframe.
